这首歌创作于1948年，最著名的把这首歌记录下来的是tommy dorsey，一个长号手和作曲家、指挥家。lee ricks 和 slim gaillard共同创作。slim gaillard 被人们熟知为mcvouty，美国爵士乐编曲和歌手，这个人也很有趣，他不仅会说五种语言自创了一种语言vout-o-reenee，还为此写了个词典。他还喜欢唱歌的时候哼一些无意义的音节、用手掌弹琴、左手弹吉他。
  这首歌的第一行音调非常像法加合唱团的民间歌曲《云雀alouette》，但前两行也更像是the itsy-bitsy spider:
  the itsy bitsy spider climbed up the waterspout.
  down came the rain
  and washed the spider out.
  out came the sun
  and dried up all the rain
  and the itsy bitsy spider climbed up the spout again.
  作为歌谣的down by the station当然比1948年更早出现，现有文献最早记载是1931年的一本娱乐杂志。
